A new office build-out usually means cabling from scratch: running lines to every workstation, setting up a wiring closet or server room, and terminating everything at a patch panel. Retail spaces often need a smaller footprint, cabling for point-of-sale systems, back-office computers, and Wi-Fi access points.

Not every job is a new build-out. Businesses that are growing, reconfiguring their space, or adding equipment often need what’s called a “move, add, or change,” meaning new cabling added to an existing system without ripping out what’s already there. From there, I put together a quote that breaks down the scope and timeline. Once you’re ready, I run the cabling, terminate everything at the patch panel, and label each run so it’s easy to trace later. Every run gets tested before I call the job done, so you’re not left guessing whether a connection actually works. I coordinate with your other trades or IT provider if the job calls for it, and I’ll walk you through the finished system before I leave.

Structured and data cabling work is different from panel or generator work when it comes to permits. Massachusetts doesn’t require a separate low-voltage license for general data and network cabling the way it does for fire alarm or security system work, and it’s covered under the communications section of the National Electrical Code rather than the standard power-wiring permit process.

Whether a permit applies can depend on the scope of the job and the city. If your project does need one, it goes through the City of Lowell’s Division of Development Services, 375 Merrimack Street, Room 55. I’ll tell you upfront whether your project needs a permit and handle it if it does.
